Playlist for My Sister’s Reaper
Picking songs to fit My Sister’s Reaper was like an emotional journey to me. I think these songs fit the moods of the story and the emotions of the characters. Here’s a playlist of songs, including a line from each song that particularly fit the story.
Thirty Seconds to Mars – The Kill (Bury Me)
“What if I fell to the floor, couldn’t take this anymore, what would you do?”
I think this is a perfect way to describe how Zadie is feeling as she struggles with the Reaper haunting her and the strange behavior her sister exhibits.
The Smiths – Girlfriend in a Coma
“There were times when I wanted to strangle her, but I’d hate anything to happen to her.”
This is a great representation of Zadie’s dilemma. She has two very strong feelings regarding her sister, and I think this line fits those two sides.
Bastille – Things We Lost in the Fire
“I was the match and you were the rock, maybe we started this fire.”
“Do you understand that we will never be the same again?”
This is metaphorical, of course. Zadie is the match, since she was the one to carry out the action to anger the Reaper, and Mara was the rock, the object that was struck against, the one unable to resist, the one with no power to do anything to avoid the Reaper.
Within Temptation – What Have You Done?
“Would you mind if I hurt you? Understand that I need to?
Wish that I had other choices than to harm the one I love”
“Why, why does fate make us suffer?
There’s a curse between us, between me and you”
“Would you mind if I killed you? Would you mind if I tried to?”
These lines are so so so perfect for Mara.
RVRB – Lost in the Wild
I picked this one more for the intense feeling I get when hearing it. It fits the parts of the story where Zadie feels hopeful that there’s something she can do about the dire situation she’s in.
Demi Lovato – Heart Attack
“Never break a sweat for the other guys, When you come around I get paralyzed,
And every time I try to be myself, it comes out wrong, like a cry for help.”
These lines fit Zadie’s feelings for Gavin.
Imagine Dragons – Bleeding Out
“I’m bleeding out if the last thing that i dois bring it down I’ll bleed out for youso i bare my skin and i count my sins and i close my eyes and i take it inI’m bleeding out, I’m bleeding out for you””When the day has come but I’ve lost my way around and the seasons stop and hide beneath the groundwhen the sky turns grey and everything is screaming
I will reach inside just to find my heart is beating”
I could actually post the entire lyrics here, as it fits so well. This is Zadie’s song for Mara, how she would do anything for her.
Cameron Mitchell – Blackbird
“Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life, you were only waiting for this moment to arise,
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
all your life, you were only waiting for this moment to be free.”
I’ve always loved this song, and I think it’s like a message to Zadie, to give her strength to do what she has to do and give her hope that she can get through it, fly, and be free.
(Plus I LOVE Cameron Mitchell’s voice. It’s so soothing and comforting. Yes, he’s the singer from RVRB.)
Linkin Park – Waiting for the End
“Waiting for the end to come, wishing I had strength to stand
This is not what I had planned, it’s out of my control.”
I think this is the perfect theme song for Zadie’s fight with the Reaper.
So, those are my picks for the My Sister’s Reaper playlist. I’m sure there are more songs out there that fit the story. It would be so cool, if it became a movie one day, to have some of these songs on the actual soundtrack!
My Sister’s Reaper by Dorothy Dreyer
Sixteen-year-old Zadie’s first mistake was telling the boy she liked she could bring her dead sister back to life. Her second mistake was actually doing it.
When Zadie accidentally messes with the Reaper’s Rite that should have claimed her sister Mara, things go horribly wrong. Mara isn’t the same anymore—Zadie isn’t even sure she’s completely human, and to top it off, a Reaper is determined to collect Mara’s soul no matter what. Now Zadie must figure out how to defeat her sister’s Reaper, or let Mara die … this time for good.

I almost didn’t see her. The room was still, and I’d turned to head up the stairs. But something by the kitchen island caught my eye. Something that shouldn’t have been there. A shoe. Mara’s leg, sticking out from behind the counter. I circled the island to find out why she was sitting on the floor and came face to face with a large knife.
Mara was in a tank top, running the serrated blade in a slow line near her shoulder. The cut ran just along the surface of her skin, blood oozing from the broken skin and staining her top. I gasped, and Mara looked up at me with a tear-streaked face.
I dropped to my knees and grabbed her hand. “Mara!”
“I have to.” She pulled away, stronger than I thought. “He wants the pain.”
“Stop it! You don’t have to do this!”
She twisted away from me, her eyes wild as she dug the knife into her shoulder. This time deeper. Lines of red ran down her arm. I grabbed her wrist and used all my might to separate the knife from her skin. She screamed, her teeth bared like some kind of untamed animal. Myeyes darted around the room, searching for unusually dark shadows.
I felt desperate, my voice pleading when I said, “Mara, I’m trying to help you.”
“I need more time!”
“Just let go of the knife!”
“You don’t know what he wants from me! You have no idea!”
